confidence is beauty

By now, most people understand that this world is flawed. We have subconsciously created views about the way that people should look, the way that people should act, and the way that people should live their lives. By any “normal” beauty standards, women are supposed to be skinny, have nice boobs and a butt, and maintain clear skin. For many, this can be exhausting. It leads to issues with self esteem, self confidence, and self love. But no matter what society wants, this world is changing and CONFIDENCE IS BEAUTY.

Yeah, yeah. I know that I sound like a total cliche for saying such a thing, but it is true. If you are comfortable in your own skin, then you radiate energy and passion for life. People are drawn to personalities no matter how often we are told that it is based on appearances. I mean come on, I know that we have all had experiences where someone becomes more and more attractive simply based on their personality. So let it freaking shine through. Show people who you are.

This being said, I don’t think that makeup is a bad thing. Makeup isn’t, or shouldn’t be about covering up so called imperfections. It should be about being able to feel confident, beautiful, and strong in your own skin. There is a false sense of beauty in simply hiding behind a screen of makeup. Everyone is different and everyone’s skin is different, but it is nothing to be ashamed of.

This fact is something that I learned from a young age. I grew up surrounded by skin care and makeup. Since I was two years old, my mother worked as an Independent Sales Director for Mary Kay: a cosmetic company founded by Mary Kay Ash in 1963. This company was started as a confidence booster for women. Mary Kay wanted to give women an outlet to feel comfortable in their own skin and allow them to pave a way for themselves by selling products and in turn leaving a positive impact on the lives of other women. I know that I sound like I’m preaching the cause and promoting Mary Kay as an advertisement, but this is all the truth. Although I grew up with all of this makeup, there was never pressure from any of the women around me to wear makeup; in fact, it was quite the opposite.

The women that I was surrounded with were incredible and strong. Many of them were shy when they started, but it didn’t matter. They had a support system through other women that built them up and showed them how to truly be themselves. I was told that I was beautiful no matter what I looked like, whatever makeup that I wore or didn’t wear. They loved me as I was and still love me as I am. That being said, I LOVE MAKEUP.

There is something about putting on makeup, even a minimal amount that makes me feel so great about myself. In no way is it about hiding my red spots, freckles, or “imperfections”; makeup to me is almost like putting on new clothes. I get excited about it because even putting on a swipe of mascara boosts my confidence. Some days are just really bad days, we all have them. I tend to want to stay in bed, binge Netflix, and take naps; not a good habit I know, but that is the reality of it. The one thing that always can get me out of bed and moving is putting on makeup. I sit in front of my mirror, listen to music, and feel confident. I can take myself from being sad to feeling like a boss lady in a quick 10 minutes and I love it.

Makeup is not for everyone, but one thing that I have learned over the years is that it works for me. I don’t like wearing a lot of makeup; I keep it simple. But even just simple skin care can make me feel confident. When I feel confident, I can radiate that confidence outwards as well. Confidences in myself gets me up in the morning and gives me the desire to go and be with people. So yeah, society is not perfect, and the idea of makeup can sometimes be contorted, but I believe what Mary Kay Ash believed when she started her cosmetic company: women deserve to feel confident in their own skin because confidence is beauty.
